Last week, the University of Birmingham, the charity organization Grace in War-Affected Regions, and UKRI Research England held a research workshop in Uzhhorod, Ukraine. Ukrainian Incentives DMC is proud to be part of the organizational team.  This is a powerful example of resilience and international cooperation.

About the Workshop

The workshop gathered researchers, charity representatives, and local partners to discuss academic and humanitarian cooperation in war-affected regions of Ukraine.

What the Organizers said

Why live format was more efficient:

It was able to have more valuable discussions. Given the sensitivities of the topics under discussion a live format was more suitable. We hope to develop sustainable relationships with individuals and organisations at the workshop – we were better able to develop these relationships by meeting in person.

In-person interaction allowed more natural and spontaneous communication, facilitating better understanding and knowledge sharing. The shared experiences led to more intense interactions and allowed us to connect in a meaningful way, which will hopefully improve working as a team in the next steps of building a strong network with a sense of common purpose to advance our policy agenda. The in-person format. also increased our focus and reduced distractions, leading to collaborative and creative discussions.

Detailed due diligence on the safety of the location (Uzhhorod at the Ukraine-Slovakia border) and extremely competent and transparent support from Ukrainian Incentives DMC were weighed against the remaining risks of holding the meeting in a country at war. This together with the very significant added value of holding a much more inclusive and efficient workshop in Uzhhorod than would have been possible outside Ukraine let to our decision.
